It was unanimously decided to appoint Alpidio Armas as Chairman and Santiago González as Chief Executive Officer.
Today (Monday 23 September), the president of El Hierro Island Council, Alpidio Armas, chaired the Board of Directors of Gorona del Viento El Hierro, S.A. in order to appoint the new Board members who, on behalf of the Island Council, will now become part of the company’s governing body.
The Board of Directors, chaired by Mr Armas, is tasked with organising, driving forward and directing the company’s operations. The new Board members will safeguard the Island Council’s 65.82% holding in the company; the other partners are the electricity company Endesa with a 23.21% holding, the Canary Islands’ Institute of Technology with 7.74%, and the Canary Islands Government with 3.23%.
Along with Alpidio Armas, councilmembers Lucía Fuentes, David Cabrera, Micel Álvarez, Santiago González and Juan Pedro Sánchez have been appointed as members of the Board of Directors, in accordance with the representation agreement on collective bodies adopted by the Plenary of the Island Council of El Hierro.
“Recent milestones, such as the achievement of 24 consecutive days operating at 100% capacity, and the average coverage of 97% during July place us in the vanguard of electricity generation from clean sources. We are definitely on the right track,” stated Mr Armas. “Gorona del Viento must continue growing as a technically- and socially-innovative flagship project in the deployment of renewable energies,” he added.
In July this year, the Wind-Pumped Hydro Power Station beat its previous 100% operating record. Those twenty-four consecutive days mean that the Wind-Pumped Hydro Power Station has notched up over 5,200 hours working at 100% capacity since its launch, and has thus prevented the emission of around 80,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.
During the General Meeting and the Board of Directors’ meeting, both of which took place this morning, the new Board members took up their positions, and it was unanimously decided to appoint Alpidio Armas as Chairman and Santiago González as Chief Executive Officer.
“We need to be ambitious in the pursuit of genuine advances that will improve people’s lives. Thanks to the Wind-Pumped Hydro Power Station, we have achieved the position where most of El Hierro’s electricity is generated from wind and water. Now, we are striving to get the greatest possible benefit from other technologies for generating clean energy (such as solar, biomass and wave power), and to improve mobility across the Island,” added the Chair of Gorona del Viento.
